Custom Jersey FAQs
Sublimated football uniforms are a type of custom football uniform that uses a special printing process to create high-quality, vibrant designs. Sublimation is a process where heat is used to transfer ink onto fabric, creating a permanent bond between the ink and the material. This process allows for intricate designs and patterns to be printed onto the fabric, resulting in a unique, one-of-a-kind look. Sublimated football uniforms are often preferred by teams who want a bold, eye-catching design that stands out on the field. Printing names and numbers on kits is common practice for sports teams and can often be a complicated and expensive process. Spized use sublimation printing, which vaporises the colours and printing into the fabric, fusing your design, logos, names, numbers and everything else together with the kit itself.

Trump was also indicted in federal court in August over the fake electors scheme. Three fake electors are among those charged in Georgia alongside Trump and others in a sweeping indictment accusing the defendants of participating in a wide-ranging scheme to illegally overturn the state’s results. A state grand jury on Wednesday issued an indictment in which the electors are each charged with nine criminal counts, including conspiracy, fraudulent schemes and artifices, fraudulent schemes and practices, and six counts of forgery.

“The Republican electors put forth a valid document that said, in the event that the election certification was overturned, there would be no excuse not to recognize those electors,” Lamon said. Lamon, a steady financial supporter of Republican causes and candidates, helped bankroll security for the Arizona Senate's much-criticized review of ballots cast in 2020.

Michigan’s attorney general filed felony charges in July against 16 Republican fake electors on counts that included forgery and conspiracy to commit election forgery. Charges have been dropped against a defendant who reached a cooperation deal, and the remaining 15 have pleaded not guilty. In another election-related case brought by Mayes’ office, two Republican officials in a rural Arizona county who delayed canvassing the 2022 general election results face felony charges. A grand jury indicted Cochise County Supervisors Peggy Judd and Tom Crosby in November on one count each of conspiracy and interference with an election officer.

The nonprofit got its start advocating for conservative politics at high schools and universities, but it and its affiliated organizations have grown to become influential in the conservative culture wars. They have also drawn controversy for spreading false information, including about elections. In December, a Nevada grand jury indicted six Republicans on felony charges of offering a false instrument for filing and uttering a forged instrument in connection with false election certificates. Eleven people nominated as Arizona’s Republican electors in 2020 met in Phoenix that Dec. 14 to sign a certificate claiming that they were “duly elected and qualified” electors and that Trump had carried the state. A one-minute video of the signing ceremony was posted on social media by the Arizona Republican Party at the time. The document was later sent to Congress and the National Archives, where it was ignored.
Another passage of the indictment appears to describe attorney Kenneth Chesebro, one of the planners of the alleged scheme, as an unindicted coconspirator. Chesebro pleaded guilty last year in Georgia to conspiracy charges brought against him, Trump and 17 other people in the state. He is also believed to be one of the unidentified co-conspirators special counsel Jack Smith described in his federal election interference indictment of Trump last year. Bowyer is the chief operating officer at Turning Point USA, a Phoenix-based nonprofit with a similarly named political advocacy arm.
The indictment names the 11 Republican electors, and the names of seven other defendants are redacted. Those individuals have not yet been served, but details in the indictment make clear they include top Trump aides, including Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows. Trump lost Arizona by just under 11,000 votes.

Many home buyers pay for this as part of their monthly mortgage payment. A shorter term will allow you to pay off the loan quicker, pay less interest and build equity faster, but you’ll have a higher monthly payment. A longer term will have a lower monthly payment because you’ll pay off the loan over a longer period of time. You may enter your own figures for property taxes, homeowners insurance and homeowners association fees, if you don’t wish to use NerdWallet’s estimates.
Conforming loans vs non-conforming loans
Paying a lower interest rate in those initial years could save hundreds of dollars each month that could fund other investments. Your interest rate and monthly payment will increase after the introductory period, which can be three, five, seven or even 10 years, and can climb substantially depending on the terms of your loan. In general, for a 30-year fixed loan, you will have the lowest monthly payment but the highest interest rate. However, with a 15-year fixed, you’ll have a higher payment, but will pay less interest and build equity and pay off the loan faster. Key factors in calculating affordability are 1) your monthly income; 2) cash reserves to cover your down payment and closing costs; 3) your monthly expenses; 4) your credit profile. Down payment & closing costsNerdWallet's ratings are determined by our editorial team.

Edit these figures by clicking on the amount currently displayed. The loan type you select affects your monthly mortgage payment. Explore mortgage options to fit your purchasing scenario and save money. Remember, your monthly house payment includes more than just repaying the amount you borrowed to purchase the home. The "principal" is the amount you borrowed and have to pay back (the loan itself), and the interest is the amount the lender charges for lending you the money.
In essence, the lender helps the buyer pay the seller of a house, and the buyer agrees to repay the money borrowed over a period of time, usually 15 or 30 years in the U.S. A portion of the monthly payment is called the principal, which is the original amount borrowed. The other portion is the interest, which is the cost paid to the lender for using the money. There may be an escrow account involved to cover the cost of property taxes and insurance. The buyer cannot be considered the full owner of the mortgaged property until the last monthly payment is made.

If you choose, we’ll also show you estimated property taxes and homeowners insurance costs as part of your monthly payment. The NerdWallet mortgage payment calculator cooks in all the costs that are wrapped into your monthly payment, including principal and interest, taxes and insurance. The more info you’re able to provide, the more accurate your total monthly payment estimate will be. Loan term (years) - This is the length of the mortgage you're considering.
Over the length of the loan, though, the 15-year loan is a far better deal, considering the interest you pay — $514,715 in total. With the 30-year, you pay $646,624 total — over $100,000 more. Our loan is half the length, and so the value for n is 180. Each month we’ll pay $2,859.53, over 60% more than with the 30-year loan. When all’s said and done, for a 30-year loan at 3.5% interest, we’ll pay $1,796.18 each month. Under "Home price," enter the price (if you're buying) or the current value (if you're refinancing).
Mortgage options and terminology
Interest is the fee you pay to your mortgage company to borrow the money. The interest you pay is based on a percentage of the remaining loan amount. For more on the types of mortgage loans, see How to Choose the Best Mortgage.
Lock in low rates currently available and save for years to come! If you secure a fixed mortgage rate your payments won't be impacted by future rate hikes. By default we show 30-year purchase rates for fixed-rate mortgages. You can switch over to refinance loans using the [Refinance] radio button.
There are also optional inputs within the calculator for annual percentage increases under "More Options." Using these can result in more accurate calculations. An FHA loan is government-backed, insured by the Federal Housing Administration. FHA loans have looser requirements around credit scores and allow for low down payments. An FHA loan will come with mandatory mortgage insurance for the life of the loan. A homeowners insurance premium is the cost you pay to carry homeowners insurance – a policy that protects your home, personal belongings and finances. The homeowners insurance premium is the yearly amount you pay for the insurance.
This formula can help you crunch the numbers to see how much house you can afford. Alternatively, you can use this mortgage calculator to help determine your budget. These are also the basic components of a mortgage calculator. Mortgage interest is the cost you pay your lender each year to borrow their money, expressed as a percentage rate. The calculator auto-populates the current average interest rate.
In addition to mortgages options (loan types), consider some of these program differences and mortgage terminology. When a loan exceeds a certain amount (the conforming loan limit), it's not insured by the Federal government. Loan limits change annually and are specific to the local market. Jumbo loans allow you to purchase more expensive properties but often require 20% down, which can cost more than $100,000 at closing. VA loans are partially backed by the Department of Veterans Affairs, allowing eligible veterans to purchase homes with zero down payment (in most cases) at competitive rates.

Safsten, who has worked as an adviser to several Republican congressmen from Arizona, was executive director of the Arizona Republican Party when he signed as a Trump elector. Pellegrino was secretary for the Arizona Trump electors and has a long history of leadership in state GOP politics. She has led two conservative groups, the Arizona Federation of Republican Women, and the Ahwatukee Republican Women's Club, and was a delegate to Republican National Committee conventions in 2012, 2016 and 2020. Eleven Republicans who signed documents falsely claiming that Donald Trump won the state in 2020 are facing criminal consequences in Arizona for the first time.

An Arizona grand jury has indicted Mark Meadows, who served as former President Trump’s chief of staff, and former Trump lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani along with 16 others in an election interference case. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, led the investigation. She won her election to be the state’s chief prosecutor in November 2022, replacing Republican Mark Brnovich, a onetime ally of Trump who later earned his scorn for not substantiating his claims of election fraud in the state. The state Republican Party documented the signing of the certificate in a social media post and sent it to Congress and the National Archives. One is described as an attorney “often identified as the Mayor” who spread false allegations of election fraud, a description that clearly describes former New York Mayor Giuliani. Another is described as Trump’s “chief of staff in 2020,” a clear reference to Meadows.
Who are the 11 Arizona fake electors facing criminal charges for claiming Trump won in 2020?
Those charged in Arizona on Wednesday include Kelli Ward, a former state GOP chair and failed U.S. Senate candidate; state Sen. Jake Hoffman; Tyler Bowyer, a Turning Point USA executive who serves on the Republican National Committee; state Sen. Anthony Kern, who was photographed in restricted areas outside the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack and is now a U.S. House candidate; Greg Safsten, former executive director of the state GOP; and energy executive James Lamon, another unsuccessful U.S. In Arizona, Mayes’ predecessor, Republican Mark Brnovich, had conducted an investigation into the 2020 election, but the fake elector allegations were not part of that examination, according to Mayes’ office. In Wisconsin, 10 Republicans who posed as electors settled a civil lawsuit, admitting their actions were part of an effort to overturn Biden’s victory.

"We conducted a thorough and professional investigation over the past 13 months into the fake electors scheme in our state," Mayes said in a video announcing the charges. "I understand for some of you today didn't come fast enough. And I know I'll be criticized by others for conducting this investigation at all. But as I've stated before, and we'll say here again, today, I will not allow American democracy to be undermined." He announced earlier this year he would run to represent Arizona on the Republican National Committee, and he is seeking another term representing Legislative District 15 in the Arizona Senate, which includes Queen Creek, San Tan Valley and a portion of Mesa. He runs or has ownership shares of several marketing and advertising businesses, including one that was exposed years ago as a social media "troll farm" that spread disinformation. These are the 11 Arizonans who signed documents claiming to be legitimate electors for Trump, though Democrat Joe Biden won Arizona's votes in the electoral college. The Arizona charges come after a string of indictments against fake electors in other states.

There is no known criminal investigation in Wisconsin. Last fall, Mayes charged two local officials who delayed the certification of midterm election results in 2022 in Cochise County. The officials voted against certifying the county’s election results by the statutory deadline after they aired baseless accusations about the integrity of the election for months.
Bestselling author Stephen King has continued to share other people's withering descriptions of Rep. Mayes’ term as Arizona attorney general has been marked by other election cases stemming from Trump’s false claims about fraud in the 2020 election and after. In 2022, Lamon claimed during an interview with KTVK-TV in Phoenix that the electors were part of a backup plan in case Trump's election fraud claims proved successful.
As the Republican electors sent illegitimate certifications to Washington, Trump sought to put pressure on Maricopa County officials and other Arizona Republicans, including then-state House Speaker Rusty Bowers and then-Gov. A well-known GOP activist, Michael Ward was subpoenaed by the Department of Justice in its investigation of Trump's election interference. He has been married to Kelli Ward since 1995 and has served as her campaign manager in bids for the Arizona Legislature.
The county certified its election results only after a court ordered it to do so. The Arizona charges are the latest example of Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election sprouting into legal cases during his 2024 bid to retake office. Ward was also subpoenaed by the Jan. 6 committee related to the elector scheme and exercised her Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate herself more than 200 times when later testifying before that committee. Kelli Ward is a past chair of the Arizona GOP.
Cottle has served on the Arizona GOP Executive Committee and Maricopa County Republican Committee. She led the Pledge of Allegiance at a rally for former President Donald Trump in January 2022 in Florence, Ariz.
The indictment released Wednesday names 11 Republicans who submitted a document to Congress falsely declaring that Trump had beaten Joe Biden in Arizona in the 2020 presidential election. The names of seven other defendants were not immediately released because they had not yet been served with the charges. Arizona was one of seven states where “alternate electors” signed paperwork falsely claiming Trump had won the states. Prosecutors have already charged “alternate electors” in Nevada, Georgia and Michigan. Gen. Raúl Torrez said that state’s five Republican electors could not be prosecuted under the current law. Fake electors there and in Pennsylvania had added caveats to their election certificates, saying the submissions were in case they were later recognized as duly elected, qualified electors.
The virus causes your stomach or intestines or both to get inflamed (acute gastroenteritis). This leads you to have stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhea and to throw up. Therefore, the CDC has reports from every cruise vessel, on just about every cruise, even if there was no illness.

C.D.C. Investigating Gastrointestinal Illness on Luxury Cruise Ship.
According to Mayo Clinic, norovirus most often spreads in closed and crowded environments, such as hospitals, nursing homes, child care centers, schools and cruise ships. Cruise ships are required to report gastrointestinal illness cases to the CDC before arriving from a foreign port, or when 2% of the crew and passengers have the illness. Norovirus is highly contagious and can spread directly through sick people and contaminated surfaces, food, or drinks. Passengers sensitive to nausea or motion sickness should consult their doctors for medical recommendations prior to departure.

It is important to continue washing your hands often even after you feel better. There is no specific medicine to treat people with norovirus illness. To see how your specific cruise line performed on its VSP inspections, you can visit the CDC website and search their portal. This site also lists any corrective actions taken to remedy any issues. She noted that hand sanitizers do not work well against norovirus and that they are not a substitute for handwashing.

Even though you may be tempted to conceal your illness, you would be doing a great disservice to the other passengers and the crew on the cruise by keeping it a secret. Typically, norovirus lasts for one to three days, though you can spread the illness for a few days after. While each virus has a different ability to transmit, norovirus is a highly transmissible infection. According to the CDC, each person who is infected with norovirus sheds billions of viral particles.
Among those are schools, hospitals, nursing homes, dormitories, prisons, big resorts, bigger passenger ships (including cruise ferries). Norovirus is often branded as "cruise ship virus" simply because on ships health officials are required to report every gastrointestinal illness incident. This means Norovirus outbreaks are reported more quickly on ships than on land. Just for comparison, the virus can afflict as many as 3000 people per day in only one big city, which is about the passenger capacity of a typical modern cruiser.

That said, the chances of catching the bug on a cruise ship aren’t particularly high. According to the Cruise Lines Industry Association, the risk each year of getting laboratory-confirmed norovirus during a ship outbreak is about 1 in 5,500. Over half of all cases originate in long-term health care facilities, according to the CDC, while less than 1 percent of all norovirus cases come from cruise ships. Norovirus — a common and contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea — is on the rise throughout the United States, especially on cruise ships. Norovirus cases aboard cruise ships have spiked for the first time in over 10 years, and experts believe more lenient travel restrictions and an increase in cruise passengers following the Covid pandemic are to blame.
Nearly 30 Silversea cruise passengers get sick in gastrointestinal illness outbreak - USA TODAY
Nearly 30 Silversea cruise passengers get sick in gastrointestinal illness outbreak.
“While many viruses and illnesses cause a fever, norovirus does not always cause one,” said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Tennessee. It's important to wash your hands with soap and clean water frequently, but especially after using the bathroom or changing diapers, before eating and before touching your face. As 95 of the world's top 100 largest megapolises are port cities, "hospital ships" could provide healthcare very quickly and more efficiently to large numbers of people. In February 2020, the shipowner cruise company Lindblad Expeditions announced the "Premium Purity" program with a shipwide cleaning system based on ACT CleanCoat technology. The innovative ship cleaning process is based on photocatalytic antibacterial spray that when activated by light kills viruses, bacteria, airborne microbes, mould.
CDC cruise ship Norovirus reports
In early June, reports circulated that more than 175 people became sick with norovirus on a Celebrity Cruise en route to Bermuda. Find more information about gastrointestinal illness outbreaks on land and at sea. The exact number of cases needed for each alert level varies by cruise ship. It may be a certain number of cases or a certain percentage of passengers and crew on the ship.
What causes Norovirus on cruise vessels is mainly contaminated food/water. When it comes to ships, it spreads mostly through physical contact with sick people or handling contaminated objects. This includes sharing food/utensils and poor hygiene (not washing hands after bathroom use).
Both emergency and basic care are available on the ship 24 hours a day. The navies of USA, UK, Australia, China, France, Italy, Spain, Argentina, and Japan have some classes of military ships fitted with onboard hospitals. In January 2016, the CDC issued travel guidance on affected countries and suggested using enhanced precautions and even postponing travel. Similar travel warnings were issued by other health agencies and governments.
Norovirus is an illness that tends to have a wintertime seasonality with an uptake usually around February. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, cruise passenger volume is estimated to reach 106% of 2019 levels this year, with 31.5 million passengers expected to set sail. Norovirus infects between 19 million and 21 million Americans annually, the CDC reports. The most recent occurred in June on a Viking Cruises ship from Iceland that docked in New York, where 110 passengers and eight crew members fell ill. They are located on upper decks and include cabins for families, couples and single cabins.
There are paid specialty restaurants also offered, but it’s hard to beat the included lineup. While similar to her sister ship, she'll feature a new selection of spacious suites, many of which promise 270° views from the sky to the sea. Even though Queen Anne is technically a cruise ship, her luxurious venues and unique events will be reminiscent of the days in which ocean liners dominated sea travel.

This includes some breathtaking suite options (called Penthouses or Residences). There are nine different restaurants onboard, all of which focus on healthy and delicious menus which are crafted using locally-sourced food from the ship’s destinations. The ships are asymmetrical – unusual compared to most cruise ships – making the most of the available space and a lot of glass to open up the public areas and make the ship feel extremely spacious.
Entertainment & Onboard Activities
According to data from the Cruise Industry News’ Global Cruise Ship Orderbook Report, the lineup includes a diverse selection of vessels, including mega ships, premium and luxury vessels, and more. Like so many of the new cruise ships on our list, Viking Vela is slated to be its cruise line’s largest cruise ship yet. The 10th Viking Cruises ship, Viking Vela is an adults-only vessel that channels the same Viking styles and class that you can find on all its sister ships. The line’s new cruise ship is Explora II and it offers nearly 500 ocean-facing suites (no interior staterooms here). The all-inclusive cruise line has decked this ship out with various ways to play, dine and drink your sea days away.

This fledgling cruise line, an off-shoot of MSC, is about to launch their second small luxury ship. Passengers aboard Explora II will be immersed in elegant design with 461 ocean-front suites offering private terraces, floor-to-ceiling windows, and butler services. From luxury cruise ships to mainstream and river ships, it’s a busy year for launching new cruise ships in 2024. The luxury hotel brand Ritz-Carlton made waves in 2022 when it launched its first cruise ship, Evrima.
The ship is very similar to Viking’s past vessels, with all the upscale, luxurious and refined spaces and experiences that fans have come to love about the brand. In other words, just don’t expect a lot of nightlife partying or children’s entertainment. This is an adult cruise line most suited to those looking for both relaxation and transformative travel. Still, you can expect the adults-only ship to include all the same features cruisers loved about the past two Virgin Voyages ships, including tons of places to dine and drink, a bustling nightlife and wellness amenities. But MSC Cruises has been busy these past few years and MSC Seascape isn’t the only vessel it has in the works. The cruise line also anticipates introducing MSC World Europa as a new World-class cruise ship, the first in the class, to be followed by sister ships in 2024, 2025 and 2027.
We saw prices of nearly $85,000 per person for some two-week cruises for this cabin. Veranda rooms (a fancy term for balcony cabins) run up to 228 square feet plus the balcony. Ok, that’s not really a thing, but it absolutely is something that cruise lines continue to roll out the biggest, wildest, and most amazing new ships you’ve ever seen. There will also be fifteen different restaurants for guests to choose from, including a revamped Golden Lion Pub, a brand-new Japanese specialty restaurant with sushi and omakase tasting menus, and more.
Like Viking's other ocean ships, it'll sail itineraries that feature more time in ports than is common at many other lines. Like the earlier Viking ships, it'll also be adults-only, with no passengers under the age of 18 allowed. The first, Marquee, will be an alfresco dining venue that is also off-center, with an orientation that offers commanding views of the sea from the ship's port side. It'll be home to The Grill, Silversea's signature outdoor "hot rocks" dining venue, and also double as the ship's Spaccanapoli pizza outlet.

Other amenities include a running track, gym, spa, sports court, climbing wall, and one pool. As with all Silversea ships, she will have a very high crew-to-guest ratio to ensure the very best service for every guest onboard. Even on a relatively small ship, there are still eight different restaurants and a selection of bars for passengers to enjoy. While slightly bigger than earlier Viking ocean ships, Viking Vela's interior will have an almost identical look. Like Viking's 10 earlier ocean vessels, Vela will boast modern, Scandinavian-influenced decor that's soothing and upscale. Onboard activities will revolve around enrichment programs and classy entertainment, and there will be elegant meals in multiple restaurants.
There are more than six restaurants on tap, plus three outdoor pools and one indoor pool. Cruisers can expect the cruise line’s largest-ever casino aboard this ship and the most balcony cabins on a Princess Cruises ship to date. Other stand-out features include The Dome, an entertainment venue that takes inspiration from the scenery of Santorini, and which offers a pool by day and shows by night. This class of ship set a new bar in cruising for Carnival fans, and Jubilee will keep that streak alive.

According to the DMV, Cruise can only test five driverless vehicles “on specified streets within San Francisco.” The vehicles are not allowed to exceed 30 mph, and can’t operate during heavy fog or heavy rain. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to commercialize autonomous vehicles, including 1 million robotaxis by now. Cruise's test fleet is composed of hundreds of custom Chevrolet Bolt EVs equipped with driverless technology. That fleet, which it plans to launch operations with, will continue to expand until a purpose-built autonomous vehicle called the Origin is expected to be produced by GM beginning in early 2023.
Tesla, rivals get low marks for automated-driving technology
And they say Cruise isn’t doing enough to keep them safe during these public health crises. Cruise was the fifth company to receive a driverless permit from the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles, the others being Waymo, Nuro, Zoox, and AutoX. Currently, 60 companies have an active permit to test autonomous vehicles with a safety driver in California. While the department of motor vehicles did not elaborate on specific reasons for its suspension of Cruise’s license, the agency accused Cruise of misrepresenting safety information about the autonomous technology in its vehicles. The revocation followed a series of incidents that heightened concerns about the hazards and inconveniences caused by Cruise’s robotaxis. Cruise says in documents posted by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it already has updated software in test vehicles that are being supervised by human safety drivers.
Dense, urban testing meets low-speed retirement community testing
On't bother to look for the steering wheel or pedals in the new autonomous shuttle vehicle unveiled by Cruise, the startup owned by General Motors. Founded in 2013, Cruise makes self-driving cars that have the potential to save millions of lives, reshape our cities, give people more spare time, and restore freedom of movement for many. NHTSA opened an investigation on 16 October into four reports that Cruise vehicles may not exercise proper caution around pedestrians. The complaints involved vehicles operating autonomously and “encroaching on pedestrians present in or entering roadways, including pedestrian crosswalks in the proximity of the intended travel path of the vehicles”, the agency said. In the crash, another vehicle with a person behind the wheel struck a pedestrian, sending the person into the path of a Cruise autonomous vehicle. But it then pulled to the right to get out of traffic, pulling the person about 20ft (six meters) forward.
Interference with police and fire services
Its leadership has been gutted, including its cofounders resigning and nine other leaders being ousted. GM is massively cutting spending and growth plans for the business, including pausing production of a new robotaxi. In October 2023, we paused operations of our fleet to focus on rebuilding trust with regulators and the communities we serve, and to redesign our approach to safety. We’ve made significant progress, guided by new company leadership, recommendations from third-party experts, and a focus on a close partnership with the communities in which our vehicles operate. Cruise said its "goal is to resume driverless operations," however it did not provide a timeline for doing so. It also did not announce a timetable for expanding human-driven vehicles to other cities.
Most of the autonomous cars on the road today have drivers who can take control in an emergency, and the Cruise Origin may be the first to hit the roads without that capability. In documents filed with NHTSA, Cruise said its automated driving system was designed in some cases to pull over and out of traffic to minimize safety risks and disruption after a crash, with the response dependent on the characteristics of the crash. But in certain circumstances such as a pedestrian positioned on the ground in the vehicle’s path, pulling over is not the desired response. The company said in documents posted by US safety regulators on Wednesday that with the updated software, Cruise vehicles will remain stationary should a similar incident occur in the future.
Pedestrian injuries
On Thursday, Rajat Basu, chief engineer for the Origin program, validated those theories. Test scenarios also include simulating the way other road users react to the AV. Cruise’s system for this is called non-player character (NPC) AI, which is usually a video game term, but in this context, refers to all of the cars and pedestrians in a scene that represent complex multi-agent behaviors. Cruise is relying on simulations not only to prove out its safety case, but also to scale to new cities without having to perform millions of miles of tests in them first. Cruise, with Honda’s help, designed the interior of the vehicle primarily for shared rides. The screens, one on either side, will display an itinerary for picking up and dropping off each passenger, so riders know what to expect.
The company says it will also work on improved engagement with first responders to facilitate trainings in each precinct it plans to operate in. Prior to that incident, Cruise had been announcing launches in new cities — including Dallas, Houston and Miami — at a startling pace. Critics accused the company of expanding too fast and cutting corners on safety. The relaunch comes after the company ceased operations weeks after an Oct. 2 accident in which a pedestrian in San Francisco was dragged 20 feet by a Cruise robotaxi after being struck by a separate vehicle. During GM’s investor day in October, Cruise CEO Dan Ammann outlined the company’s plan to invest heavily into the compute power of the Origin in order to decrease costs by 90% over the next four generations so it can scale profitably. At the time, Ammann mentioned Cruise’s intention to manufacture custom silicon in-house to cut costs, but didn’t admit outright using that silicon to build a chip — but TechCrunch had its theories.

The driverless fleet will get the new software before resuming operations, the company says. The company’s main operations were historically based in San Francisco, but Cruise lost its permits to operate there following the accident. Cruise began expanding its paid service area in the Phoenix area in August 2023. Alphabet’s Waymo — Cruise’s main competitor that’s still active in San Francisco — has operated a paid, driverless robotaxi service in the area since 2020 and last year doubled its service area in downtown Phoenix and launched driverless rides to the airport. The vehicle’s lack of traditional human controls means that Cruise needs an exemption from the federal government’s motor vehicle safety standards, which require vehicles to have a steering wheel and pedals.
Electric Vehicle Insight: The EV race to build the RoboTaxi
In its first 15 months, Cruise AVs collectively drove one million driverless miles — a distance equivalent to more than 40 laps around the planet. “When we combine a high-fidelity environment with a procedurally generated city, that’s when we unlock the capability to efficiently scale our business to new cities,” said Gandhi. But it’s also attempting to be more pragmatic and attuned to the realities of growing and scaling a real business. Cruise has often been described as a “division” or “unit” of General Motors, but the company prefers “majority owned subsidiary.” (The automaker technically owns two-thirds of Cruise, which it bought in 2016.) However, GM isn’t the only major automaker in Cruise’s corner. In October 2018, Honda announced its plan to invest $2.75 billion in Cruise over 12 years. It’s orange and black and white, and roughly the same size as a crossover SUV, but somehow looks much larger from the outside.
Cruise, a majority-owned subsidiary of General Motors, will acquire self-driving startup Voyage in another major autonomous vehicle merger. The announcement came less than a week after news first surfaced that the two companies were in talks about an acquisition. Jacobson declined to disclose whether GM could bring Cruise into the automaker, which has its own autonomous vehicle unit and recently appointed Anantha Kancherla from Meta Platforms to the newly created position of vice president of advanced driver-assistance systems. Windsor said he does not expect any major deployment of autonomous vehicles before 2028.
Next, we’ll validate our AV’s end-to-end performance against our rigorous safety and AV performance requirements through supervised autonomous driving on public roads, in addition to the ongoing simulation and closed course driving we do. During this phase, the Cruise vehicles will drive themselves and a safety driver is present behind the wheel to monitor and take over if needed. The company last week was granted the fifth of six permits needed to commercialize a self-driving ride-hailing fleet in the state. Google's Waymo also was granted a similar permit, but it requires the vehicles to have back-up safety drivers. "In October 2023, we paused operations of our fleet to focus on rebuilding trust with regulators and the communities we serve, and to redesign our approach to safety," Cruise said in a blog post. "We've made significant progress, guided by new company leadership, recommendations from third-party experts, and a focus on a close partnership with the communities in which our vehicles operate. We are committed to this improvement as a continuous effort."
The pedestrian was pinned under one of the Cruise vehicle’s tires and was critically injured. Cruise has a strong history in Phoenix and it is home to a large number of Cruise employees. It’s a city that supports AV and transportation innovation, and Phoenix leaders strive to ensure the metro area is an incubator for advanced technology.
